Exciting Updates for Renewing Leadership!!

I am excited to get back to our "How To" series after some longer than expected time off, but before doing that, I have some exciting Renewing Leadership updates!

A little over two weeks ago, my office sponsored our first annual leadership retreat! We opened this experience to any students involved in a leadership experience on campus and got a great group of 40 who joined us for a weekend in the wilderness. I realized during the weekend that in my past attending and facilitating experiences at leadership retreats was a huge part of my life. I miss it and getting back to it was awesome! Working with these dedicated students who gave up a weekend to better themselves as leaders gives me great confidence in our future! It was also great work with my amazing professional staff team to pull this experience together!

The highlight of the retreat was the featured workshop by Toby Causby. If you aren't familiar with his work, please do yourself a favor and check out tobycausby.com and like him on Facebook. If you like him on Facebook you will receive his inspirational updates!! Toby's workshop was called "Owning Your Leadership Stories" and focused on who we are as leaders and how our unique attributes and qualities are gift that need to be shared with the world -- TODAY! Toby did a great job of showing our students they have the capacity within them to be great leaders and change the world through their positive participation in it. This is something I try to convey through Renewing Leadership with every blog post and I hope I can convey this half as well as Toby.

I was also fortunate enough to get to have lunch with Toby and spend some time chatting with him before our next sessions. I am honored Toby keeps up with the blog and his encouraging words serve as motivation for me to keep writing and thinking about ways we all can renew leadership by making it more inclusive. Since my chat with Toby, I purchased the new domain for the blog (www.renewingleadership.org) and plan to develop some workshops and sessions I can present at other colleges and universities in the future. If anyone knows anyone looking for a leadership presenter or facilitator let me know :-)

About a week ago, I had another opportunity to present at the Wisconsin College Personnel Association (WCPA) annual conference in the Wisconsin Dells. I have been an active member of WCPA for over ten years and am a Past President of the organization. My presentation was called Making Leadership More Inclusive and was the first time I presented the ideas I have laid out here in the blog in front of my colleagues from across the state. I was honored to have a big crowd that included some new professionals and some more seasoned professionals I look to as mentors and models. I think the presentation went pretty well and I was honored to have received some good feedback. I am looking forward to presenting these ideas more into the future!

Ok...next update...

One of my dreams with Renewing Leadership has been to highlight people I have worked with or have known who have great things to share about making leadership more inclusive. One of the true blessings of my life has been to work with amazing people who motivate me to be the best I can be. I am very excited to announce our first guest blogger is going to be my friend and colleague Jim Love.

I first became aware of Jim Love when I was fighting four other Hall Directors for him during RA staff selection. Jim is the kind of guy who pumps you up with his contagious enthusiasm and could get anyone motivated to do just about anything! Somehow, I won the Jim Love sweepstakes and he became a member of my RA staff. Jim lived up to the hype! He was an awesome RA and we had some great times together on that staff. After our year together, I moved on to my next position at another university and Jim moved to a different building for his second year as an RA. After graduation, Jim and his then girlfriend, now wife Jenny (another RA from our year together)went to graduate school and began a career in Student Affairs.

When I talked about Renewing Leadership with Jim and asked him to write something for the blog, that contagious enthusiasm showed up once again. I am excited for Jim to share his thoughts on Renewing Leadership sometime over the next few days. I am really excited to have this opportunity to keep connected with Jim and work with him on this blog into the future. When I was looking through pictures to spice up this blog post, I noticed a lot I could have put here that would have been a little less dignified than what I picked. I guess I will leave it with this one. Welcome to Renewing Leadership Jim! This is a dance that is just beginning...(Yes...that is Jim Love....dipping me...)
