Renewing Goals for 2013

I am never short on goals.  Each and every day I come to work in a profession that lights a fire of possibilities that I always want to pursue to the best of my ability.  New ideas are exciting to me and my Gallup Strengths of strategic and futuristic work together to always come up with a plan for how something could be improved or something new that could be done to pursue a vision.

Having goals is a positive thing, but having too many can pull you in too many directions.  As I look forward to a new year, I am more committed to not coming up with new long-term goals, but renewing and prioritizing long standing goals I have been thinking about for years and blending them into the life I have created for myself.

The central goal I have this year is to spend more time pursuing Renewing Leadership.  The idea for this blog was sparked by my experience in 2010 at the National Leadership Symposium.  It was there, that I first thought about how leadership could be more inclusive by renewing our thoughts about what leadership means.  I am just as (if not more) committed to that vision now than I was two and  a half  years ago.

There are two aspects of this goal I want to blend together, first is to spend more time updating the blog by writing more frequently.  I had a vision when it first began to invite friends and colleagues to contribute and there is more I could do to encourage that.

Second, I am committed to exploring opportunities to visit other campuses to lead trainings and workshops for student leaders and professional staff who work with student leaders.  I have done some of this over the years, but I would love to do it more frequently. I love the opportunity to take a leadership concept or theory and engage others in the process of making those ideas real in work and life.  I need to find a way to do that more often!  I'm just starting out, so I will work cheap, so hit me up if you need me!

I am fortunate to have a job I love and a family that loves and supports me.  Without those two elements, blended together, I would not be as likely to achieve the goals I have set out to achieve.  I look forward to an increased commitment to Renewing Leadership and I hope everyone reading this will look forward to it as well.

I wish you all success (however you define it) with the pursuit of your goals in the new year!
